Four Winds Inspiration Centre

Edinburgh now has the benefit of a new centre for Environmental Education as well as training in various craft skills. MidJune saw the fund-raising launch of the "Four Winds" which is based in Inverleith Park.

The project centres around utilisation of a percentage of the city's wood resource (much of which arises from the Dutch Elm Disease Control Programme). The centre has been set up to facilitate connections between like minded people (bit like this newsletter!) and as their leaflet says

Working together we can make a difference - each doing what we can.

As well as providing Environmental Education and information, closely linked to the school curriculum, a sustainable lifestyles network and close liaison with the Council's Local Agenda 21 Groups will be established.

The launch was well attended and included workshops and demonstrationsin pole-lathe work, chain-saw sculpting, basket-weaving and other woodcrafts. There were also representatives from various organisations and groups including Trees for Life, Real Foods, Sustainable Connections and an on-site masseuse.

Training opportunities in the form of workshops and courses will be available throughout the year starting with a basket-weaving course early in July. New volunteers are always welcome as are people interested in becoming Friends of the Four Winds. For more information on courses, volunteering or in general about this exciting new project contact Carol at the Centre on (0131) 332 2229.
