Allandale Animal Sanctuary

Allandale Animal Sanctuary Charitable Trust (Charity No. SCO12114), was founded in 1984 to help animals in distress. We provide a caring and happy home. No thought is given to cost when a life can be saved. All animals, which can be neutered, whether male or female, are neutered. We believe that while over 2,000 healthy cats and over 2,000 healthy dogs are still being destroyed in this country EVERY DAY, it is wrong to allow them to be born. The vast majority of these animals, which are put to death, are a result of indiscriminate breeding. We encourage and promote the neutering of cats and dogs to prevent unwanted litters.

At the moment there are 40 dogs at the sanctuary, all desperate for the good loving homes they deserve. There have been between 36 and 40 dogs cared for at the Sanctuary, every day this year - all fully inoculated and all neutered when old enough. The situation with the cats is the same. This year, every day, there have been between 23 and 31 cats here. NONE OF THESE DOGS OR CATS HAS ANYWHERE ELSE TO GO.

Every day, all the work of caring for all these vulnerable innocents falls heavily on the shoulders of one person. Cats and dogs are not the only animals given shelter and food at the Sanctuary. Today, we have mice, gerbils, rats, chipmunks, chinchillas, guinea pigs, rabbits, terrapins, ferrets, donkeys, goats, ponies, a horse and a bull.

Allandale Animal Sanctuary relies totally on voluntary donations and the fund-raising efforts of members and supporters. At the moment money is desperately needed to re-roof the stable block, this is expected to cost in the region of £10,000. Edinburgh Animal Rights have very kindly agreed to raise money for another project, to build an enclosure in the field that can be used not only to exercise the dogs but also for training. This is likely to cost around £1,000. Anyone interested in helping to raise money for Allandale should contact Lucy on (0131) 667 6725. Fund-raising meetings are held every 2 weeks at the Southsider pub in West Nicholson Street. Please phone for details of the next meeting. Anyone wishing to contribute towards the running costs of the Sanctuary should make cheques/postal orders payable to 'Allandale Animal Sanctuary' and send them to: Miss K Allan, Allandale Animal Sanctuary, Easter Baton Farm, West Benhar Road, Harthill, Lanarkshire, ML7 5TG.

We would like to thank all those who responded so generously to the appeal made in the last issue of Cruelty Free Living. This was most appreciated, by the animals most of all.

THANK YOU FOR CARING
