Allandale animal sanctuary

On Sunday October 3rd 1999 at 2pm, Holyrood Park, Edinburgh a sponsored dog walk for Allandale Animal Sanctuary will begin! Dogs (and owners) of all shapes and sizes will be gathering to raise much needed funds for the Sanctuary.

Since the Sanctuary was founded in 1984 a great deal of structural work has been done and at present one of the stable blocks is being re-roofed and new field shelters erected for the horses and ponies as well as one of the newest additions to the Sanctuary, a partially sighted 9 month old calf! The Sanctuary is home to a wide range of animals, from chipmunks and chinchillas, cats and dogs, hamsters, goats, horses, donkeys and even an old Jersey bull!

Due to ever increasing veterinary and feeding costs, fund-raising is vital to keep the Sanctuary up and running. In many cases animals come to the Sanctuary as a result of indiscriminate breeding, of owners who could not be bothered to get their animal spayed or neutered but at the same time did not want the hassle of an unwanted litter of puppies or kittens. Many of the animals simply became an inconvenience to their owner, and though not badly treated become part of the hundreds of thousands of unwanted pets who find their way into Sanctuaries or Rescue Centres every year.

The walk will be approximately 3 miles and the City of Edinburgh Council dog warden service have very kindly donated loads of disposable super dooper pooper scoopers. There will also be stewards at regular intervals along the walk with water for the dogs and extra poop scoops. All walkers will receive a certificate and there will be a prize for both dog and owner (adult and under-16) who raises the most money. Sponsor forms and further details are available on (0131) 667 6725 and (0797) 933 5415.
