Save Our Green Spaces

Plans for the proposed alignment of the A701 from the Edinburgh City Bypass towards Penicuik have met with opposition from many locals. The No Alignment Action Group (NAAG) have organised protest walks along the proposed re-alignment route. If the road goes ahead a large area of beautiful countryside, steeped in centuries of local history, would be ruined as well as an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest).

Citing the Edinburgh Bypass as an example, NAAG say that new roads generate new traffic - this means more pollution and more congestion and traffic on the relieved road soon returns to its former levels.

Organisations such as SPOKES, Friends of the Earth Scotland, Transform Sctoland, the Association for Public Transport, the RSPB and the Scottish Wildlife Trust have also come out against the road scheme which is estimated to cost £18.5 million.
